VÍDEO DA ADMIRADORA DINAMARQUESA: Portugal, um pouco mais de auto-estima, por favor!

Por que raio é que a opinião de um estrangeiro é tão importante para os portugueses? (E quase sempre, um estrangeiro extremamente mal-informado). Por amor de Deus, Portugal, dá-te ao respeito!

Por muito que eu aqui deixe críticas e faça queixas, a verdade é que Portugal é um país maravilhoso, não é?

Começando pelas praias, que são deslumbrantes e para todos os gostos. A água é fria, mas as ondas são fantásticas! O sol brilha quase todos os dias e ilumina todo o território com um brilho mágico. Não admira que tantos pintores gostem de trabalhar neste país. As serras são altas, e bonitas, com poucos – mas pitorescos – habitantes. Ah, sim, e também há aldeias e vilas piscatórias. São lindas e têm barcos antiquados e peixe… Toda a gente é bondosa e simpática. Portugal tem uma histórica tão rica e tantos futebolistas. Tem um bocadinho de tudo para todos.

As paisagens deslumbrantes, mais a história e um povo fantástico bastam para um blah blah blah blah blah blah blah…. Meu Deus! Ainda não está farto desta conversa?

Quando lê ou ouve um monte de banalidades como estas, escritas ou ditas por um estrangeiro, o que é que faz? Pensa «Olha, que simpático, alguém escreveu coisas boas sobre nós, mesmo sem ter acertado em tudo. E ainda bem, porque é bom para o turismo e para a economia», e passa à frente?

Não, Portugal, não é isso que vocês fazem. O que fazem é embaraçoso.

Na semana que passou, uma rapariga dinamarquesa publicou um vídeo, disse «Oh, Portugal é muito bom!», justificou essa afirmação com uma lengalenga condescendente sobre o CR7 e o Mourinho, fez umas piadolas fraquinhas, e vocês ficaram todos a rebentar de alegria.

«OLHEM, olhem todos!!! Ela disse que nós somos os maiores!!!», gritam, enquanto dão pulinhos como uma menina de doze anos com aparelho nos dentes e muitas borbulhas a quem o miúdo mais giro do 9º Ano tivesse concedido um olhar. O efeito que teve em vocês foi ainda mais significativo porque a dinamarquesa, por acaso, era o supra-sumo do espetacular – jovem, bonita, loira e norte-europeia.

Não é preciso que seja uma jovem e bonita escandinava a elogiar-vos para que os joelhos vos comecem a fraquejar, certo? Normalmente basta que uma qualquer obscura publicação de qualquer parte do mundo inclua uma praia portuguesa numa lista das vinte mil “melhores” praias do mundo para um montão de vocês ficarem excitadíssimos, enchendo a Internet com coisas como «OLHEM!!! A Revista de Iscos e Anzóis da Terranova disse que uma das nossas praias é a 19.999ª melhor praia do mundo!!!» Um chef estrangeiro diz algo como «Oh, Portugal, o vosso chouriço é mesmo bom!», e vocês desmaiam como se só acreditassem que o chouriço português é realmente bom quando um cozinheiro estrangeiro diz que é bom.

A mesma lógica aplica-se quando um estrangeiro diz alguma coisa muito má sobre Portugal. Vocês “atiram-se” logo todos a ele nas redes sociais, mesmo sem fazer ideia do que ele disse (veja-se o caso de Giles Coren).

Por amor de Deus, Portugal, dá-te ao respeito! Portugueses, tenham amor próprio, pode ser? Imaginam os espanhóis, ou os franceses, ou os ingleses, ou os italianos a fazerem isso? Não.

Eu não vos entendo. Vocês sabem que são espetaculares. Vocês sabem que este país é um sítio fabuloso, ainda que um bocadinho estragado em alguns lugares, mas no geral, este é um país com gente fantástica, uma história incrível, paisagens de cortar a respiração e que grande parte do resto do mundo nunca viu. Sabem ainda que a comida é fabulosa, o vinho é praticamente infalível e que… enfim, vocês sabem… se calhar usam demasiados ovos nos doces, mas que importa? Se VOCÊS gostam de ovos, força! Por que raio é que a opinião de um estrangeiro é tão importante para vocês? (E quase sempre, um estrangeiro extremamente mal-informado.)

Portugueses, não sejam aquela menina de doze anos com aparelho. Não vos fica bem.

Oi, Portugal, have some self respect.

For all that I criticise and complain about things in Portugal, it really is a wonderful country, isn’t it?

To start with, the beaches are stunning and there’s one for every taste. The sea might be cold, but the waves are amazing! The sun shines almost all day every day, and bathes the whole country in a kind of magical glow. No wonder so many painters love to paint here. The mountains are big, and nice, with a few picturesque poor people left in them. Oh, yeah, and there are fishing villages, too. They are pretty and have old fashioned boats and fish in them. Everyone is kind and friendly. Portugal has so much history and so many footballers that it has something for everyone.

The mixture of the stunning landscapes, the history and the delightful people make for a blah blah blah blah blah blah blah…. god, aren’t you bored yet?

When you read or hear a bunch of platitudes like that written by a foreigner, what do you do? Do you think “oh, that’s nice, someone wrote something nice about us, even though they didn’t get it exactly right. Well, good, it’s good for the tourist economy” and get on with your life?

No, Portugal, you do not. What you do is positively embarrass yourself.

Last week, that Danish girl made a video, said “oh, Portugal is very nice” backed up with some patronising drivel about CR7 and Mourinho, made some pretty lame jokes and you all wet your knickers with joy unbound.

“LOOK, look, everyone!!!! She said we are awesome!!!” you all squealed, while jumping up and down like a twelve year old girl with braces and spots who has just been looked at by the gorgeous boy in 9th year. The effect upon you was significantly greater because the Dane happened to be the motherlode of awesome — young, pretty, blonde and Northern European.

It doesn’t have to be a pretty young Scandinavian complimenting you to make you go weak at the knees, though, does it? It’s usually enough for any obscure publication in the world to feature a Portuguese beach in a list of the world’s “best” 20,000 beaches for a whole bunch of you to get over excited and fill the internet with “LOOK!!!! Fish Hooks of Newfoundland Weekly said that one of our beaches is the 19,999th best beach in the world!!!”. A foreign chef says “oh, Portugal, your chouriço is quite nice”, and you swoon as if you didn’t really believe that chouriço is good until a foreign chef said it was good.

There is a similar effect when someone foreign says something horrible about Portugal and you all go and bash them on twitter having absolutely no idea what he actually said in the first place (see Giles Coren).

For the love of god, Portugal, have some self respect, would you? Can you imagine the Spanish or the French or the English or the Italians doing that? No. So, don’t do it.

I don’t understand you. You know you are awesome. You know that this is a fabulous place, that it is a bit crumbly in places, but overall, this is a wonderful country with a great people, incredible history, unspeakably beautiful landscapes that most of the world doesn’t know about. You know, too, that the food is great, the wine is almost infallible and that, ok, you might overuse eggs, but who cares? YOU like eggs, hang it all! Why on earth is the opinion of a foreigner, and an extremely under-informed foreigner at that, so important to you?

Don’t be that 12 year old girl with braces, Portugal. It doesn’t become you.
